Germany, (S.E. Berlin) district of Treptow-Kopenick |

Team Berlin started in 1993 after Ken Matlack (MTW) decided to focus on church planting in the former East Berlin. Three churches have been started in the area of Friedrichshain, Marzahn, and Pankow. Priorities have been training national leaders, church planting, children and youth work, and community outreach. The work specific to Treptow-Köpenick started in 2005. Jay and Holly Eastman had worked in other areas of Team Berlin’s outreach ministries since 2001 and were invited by our partnering church, the Lukas Gemeinde, to start a new work in a largely unreached area in Berlin southeast. That first year brought key local partners with whom the Eastmans formed a prayer group, and after a year of seeking God and making contacts, a core church planting group focused on Altglienicke, a local neighborhood in SE Berlin. Since then, we have grown into a regular Bible study, children’s ministry has begun as well as many English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses. Evangelism and discipleship are currently the main focus of ministry. |
Current Ministries: Small group meetings for Christians, children’s group, EFL, women’s group, many neighborhood outreaches networking together our non-Christian friends and contacts from ministry and our Christian core group for church planting.
Future Ministry: Kindergarten, men’s ministry, another small group for new Christians and those interested in learning about faith, church plant

Current Needs
English teachers are needed for development of the English as a foreign language (EFL) ministry on a two-year basis or long-term. Intercessors are needed to develop focused prayer strategies in each of the districts.
Evangelists are needed who are able to develop bridge-building ministries (i.e., through music, arts, theatre, sports, community services).
Children’s worker/minister would serve to meet the needs of the growing demand of the younger believers and their non Christian friends.
Fluency in German (for short-termers) or willingness to learn (for long-term missionaries) is required as all ministry is done in German. |
Cultural and Ministry Context
The society in former East Berlin is atheist, post-Christian, well informed of modern events and thought, skeptical and quite self-reliant. However, once one breaks through the surface barriers, the people are steadfast and loyal friends. The city itself bears no resemblance to the pictures of southern Germany that most Americans associate with Germany. | We are excited about your interest in a long-term commitment to missions service.
MTW uses a team-based approach to missions. For that reason, we actively seek missionaries from a variety of backgrounds—ordained or unordained, singles and families, men and women—and with many different ministry skills and interests.
Though MTW's first priority is church planting, we also have missionaries working in a variety of other ministries such as teaching, medicine, community development, and administration.
We currently have one- and two-year and long-term ministry opportunities in over 50 different countries around the world. You are needed on the mission field!

Current Ministries: Team Berlin has ministries in the following East Berlin districts: Marzahn, Pankow, Prenzlauer Berg and Köpenick. Those in Marzahn are forming a youth church, and have seen the fruits of multiplication through the gospel. Outreach programs include a gospel choir, basketball, concerts, and other special events. The ministry in Pankow has focused on forming cell groups in homes. In one year, the rapid growth has required expansion from one to three groups. Outreach includes teaching English and other community services. The Prenzlauer Berg portion of the team has been blessed with a family center as well as with new believers. Programs for children and their parents include Bible studies, the German version of Boy Scouts, and English classes. A new team in Köpenick has formed with two small groups committed to reaching their neighborhoods for Christ through playground outreach, English ministry, and inviting non-Christians to gatherings like BBQ parties.
Opportunities for short-term teams include outreaches and relationship evangelism as a part of the Teaching English Ministry. Team members would be partners for the participants and need to be willing and able to share their faith. > Download the Berlin English Camp brochure
