Mountmellick, Ireland

Once the stronger of the two congregations in this union, Mountmellick has declined due to a period of prolonged vacancy and the loss of a number of families. This, along with the upcoming sale of their derelict building, has led to a general feeling of depression in the small Presbyterian community.  The Presbyterian Church in Mountmellick has been witnessing for Christ for just less than three hundred years.  William has been minister of the Mountmellick and Tullamore congregations for almost two years.

Current Ministry: During the last year new contacts have been made between the church and the local community with holiday teams running summer clubs.  However, this work needs to be developed on a year-round basis rather than simply remaining seasonal.

Future Ministry: Much of the work in this area is more akin to church-planting than traditional congregational evangelism.  The church staff is looking to find effective ways of sharing the gospel in a largely Roman Catholic environment, in which Protestants are viewed with distrust.  There is a need to build relationships with the local community as well as re-establish connections made by former mission workers in the town.
